Let 40 be the nth term
n =  \frac{tn - t1}{d}  + 1 \\  \frac{40 - 72}{ - 2}  + 1 = 17
Therefore, 40 is the 17th term

HERE'S YOUR ANSWER.....✌️✌️

first term = 72 , common difference = (-2) , last term = 40 .

l = a+(n-1)d

=> 40 = 72 + ( n-1 ) (-2)

=> -32 = (n-1)(-2)

=> 16 = n-1

=> n = 17

So, 40 is the 17th term of the given A.P. series.
