A “hypertonic solution” has more molecules ‘outside the cell’ than ‘inside the cell’.

Hyper means ‘higher’ or ‘greater’ and tonicity is the ability of water molecules to move across a membrane by osmosis to achieve equal “concentration or osmolarity” on either side of the “membrane”.

When cells are present in a solution where the ‘concentration of molecules’ is higher, water from inside the cells will move out to establish equilibrium and the cells would ideally shrink.
