It's easy to tell if a solution is unsaturated, saturated, or supersaturated by adding a very small amount of solution. If the solution is unsaturated, the solute dissolves. It won't, if it saturates the solution. The solution you have added will form crystals around it very quickly if the solution is supersaturated.
