Subsistence crisis-An extreme situation where basic means of livelihood are endangered.

The causes for subsistence crisis are :-

• Due to drought or hail which happened very frequently in the old regime the crops were destroyed.
• Often their was bad harvest which led to shortage of food grains leading to the rise in the prices of bread ,so the poor people could not afford it so this led to death and sickness.
• Population of France rose from 25 million to 28 million from 1715 to 1783
