The Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

The US Invasion of Iraq

The Taliban's Rise to Power

Explanation:

  • From December 1979 to February 1989 the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan took place. Together with the communist dictatorship in Afghanistan, the Soviet Union fought, while the US, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan supported independent insurgent Mujahideen groups. It led to the civil war in Afghanistan. The 40th Soviet Army had invaded Afghanistan in 1979 December, in the middle of the Cold War, to campaign for the Communist government of  "the People's Democratic Movement" in Afghanistan against the rising insurgency. The Soviet Union had feared the loss in Afghanistan of its communist representative.
  • The United States. Iraq's occupation in 2003 happened. The 1st stage of the war ended in May 2003 (over a month since its beginnings), but US troops stayed there until 2011. A further justification was the alleged connection between the Saddam Hussein government and terrorist organisations, in particular AlQaida, along with Iraq's alleged development of weapons of mass destruction. In this sense, as part of a wider war on terrorism, the Bush Administration has cast the Iraq war.
  • The Taliban has been a conservative Islamic army movement in Afghanistan. The Taliban occupied the majority of Afghanistan between 1996-2001 during the "Afghan civil war". It was overthrown at the time of the US occupation in 2001.
