When Evelyn Glennie found out about her hearing impairment, she didn’t want to give up her interest in music. She remained strong and determinant to lead a normal life and it is this determinacy that helped her overcome her deafness.

She started to sense the music with her other sense organs instead of trying to hear the sound only, and soon she discovered that she was being able to sense definite notes in different sections of her body.

And gradually by observing the beats, by opening up her mind and body to the sounds and vibrations of musical instruments, she was able to take in every rhythm and tune of music. It is said that when someone loses one sense organ, the other five becomes more sensitive and alert.

Evelyn lost her hearing but she had been gifted with the blessings of perceiving different sounds, more intensely than normal people could. She explained that music ran through every part of her body –her skin, her cheekbones, her bare feet, her fingertips and even her hair. Her sense of feeling is so profound that she’s able to express her music in a beautiful way that touches our heart.

She herself says that it was her ability to sense and her sheer determination along with hard work that had enabled her to overcome the challenge of deafness.
