Eucalyptus and Acacia trees were extensively planted on the Nilgiri Hills in the 1950s.
This was done to provide a steady supply of pulp wood for a rayon factory and a tannin factory. More Eucalyptus trees were planted later.
But in the 1980s, it was found that these Eucalyptus trees were one of the causes of the water crisis in the district.
