Grand Trunk road existed since the time of Mauryans (Chandragupta Maurya ) . It connected Patliputra (Patna) to western most part of Indian subcontinent .
During Medieval India - Kanyakubja (kannauj) was the most prominent city of India before the Islamic invasion . The Palas of Bengal once ruled from Kannauj till Bengal , they might have used this route for travelling, trade between North and Eastern part of their Empire .
Delhi sultanate -
The Jaunpur sultanate (Sharqi rulers ) used this route on their March to Delhi .
Muhammad Bin Tughlaq shifted his capital from Delhi to Daulatabad (Deogiri) and constructed a highway between the two cities ( North to Deccan) . Previously a route to Deccan was used by Malik Kafur on his expedition to South India from Delhi , so extension to Grand Trunk route to Deccan was built .
Then comes Sher Shah Suri
He originally belonged to Jaunpur , exiled in Chunar (near Benaras) later settled at Sasaram .
When he captured Delhi from Mughal Emperor Humayun, he constructed (repaired) the highway and it extended from Bihar (Sasaram to Delhi further up to Lahore) . He constructed Sarais (inns) at every two kos i.e at every 8 kilometers . He constructed town markets and populated the areas around Sarais . Both Hindus and Muslims were given separate accommodation . A stable for horses and a godown for traders was also provided .
