This is a Redox reaction in which oxidisation state of the metal changes .

Explanation:

Zinc metal is oxidised to zn²+ whereas cu²+ ( as cupric chloride ) is reduced to copper metal.

We can wrue the invidual Redox equations:

Cu²+ + 2 e- = Cu(s)

zn(s) = Zn²+ 2e-

A zinc electrode particle in a blue solution of Cu²+ (aq) would rapidly acquire a copper coating; meanwhile the colour of the solution would fade as the copper precipates.
