Covalent bond is formed in the diagram

Explanation:

  • The diagram represents formation of water molecule from 2 atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen. Since sharing of electrons occurs , it is referred to as a covalent bond.
  • In water molecule , every hydrogen atom is covalently bound to the central oxygen atom by sharing a pair of electrons to attain stability. Only two of the total 6 electrons in the outermost shell of oxygen are used for boding purpose. This leaves  four electrons that form non-bonding pairs. These four electron pairs that surround the oxygen atom arrange themselves far away from each other to reduce the repulsive forces between them.
