In grignard reagent, the Mg-X bond is ionic because there is electronegativity difference between Mg(electropositive element) and X (halogen which is electronegative). The R group in the grignard reagent is highly basic because of the partial negative charge it acquires due to the presence of Mg. It can abstract hydrogen from acidic compounds and liberate R-H
