Mitotic division is required for growth and repair of body... it usually occur in vegetative parts of plants and somatic parts of animal body. 2 daughter cells are formed by this type of division.The chromosome number remains same. It can take place in any type of cell either haploid,diploid or triploid.

Meiotic cell division is involved in formation of gamete... it occurs in reproductive organs of animals. 4 daughter cells are formed due to this type of division. The chromosome number become half during this division i,e 23 from mother and 23 from father.It takes place only in diploid cell.

Mitosis maintains the cell's original ploidy level (for example, one diploid 2n cell producing two diploid 2n cells; one haploid n cell producing two haploid n cells; etc.).
