Ions are charged entities which form on gain or loss of electron.

Ions formed by gain of electrons are negatively charged ions. They are also known as anions.

Example of anion is - Cl-, where chlorine has gained one electron to complete it's octet.

Ions formed by loss of electrons are positively charged ions. They are also known as cations.

Example of cation is - Na+, where sodium loses one electron to become more stable.
