India experiences a range of climates from 'tropical in the south to alpine' and 'temperate in the Himalayan north'

EXPLANATION:

India’s climates are divided into 4 different groups based on the 'Koppen climate classification system' (divides climates into 5 key climate groups: 'tropical', 'dry', 'temperate', 'continental', and 'polar'.

  • Tropical Wet (Humid): This climatic type is divided into two subtypes: 'tropical monsoon/wet climate' (experiences moderate-high temperature with seasonal however heavy rainfall), and tropical dry and wet climate ('summers are very hot') or savannah climate.
  • Tropical Dry: This climatic type is divided into 3 subtypes: 'tropical semi-arid/steppe climate' (hot and dry summers and unreliable rainfall), subtropical arid/desert climate (erratic and scanty c rainfall and extreme summers) and 'subtropical semi-arid/steppe' (unreliable rainfall and hot summers) climate.
  • Subtropical Humid Climate: Summers are extremely hot and during winter temperature plunge to as low as zero degrees. Rainfall occurs in summers however 'snowfall/occasional' rainfall in winters is seen in some areas.
  • Mountain Climate: The temperature drops by '0.6°C for every 100 m' rise in height in the Himalayas resulting in a number of climates from tundra to tropical. There is 'less rain' in the protected 'side of the mountains' while 'heavy rainfall' is received by 'the well-exposed slopes'.
