Nimbostratus clouds are the rain clouds. Among the many clouds in the sky these are the ones that cause the most rain.

These clouds can cause continuous precipitation which lasts for hours. The characteristic features of these clouds are that they are low level clouds and are full of moisture.

The excessive moisture content in these clouds are responsible for the heavy precipitation and hence are named as the rain clouds.

There is another type of clouds which causes rain i.e. Cumulonimbus. They cause rain, lightning and also thunderstorms.
