Thyroid follicular cells form a simple cuboidal epithelium and are arranged in spherical follicles surrounding a fluid filled space known as the colloid. The interior space formed by the follicular cells is known as the follicular lumen. Simple squamous epithelium is found in the alveoli of lungs, and its structure is important for the exchange of gases between the blood and lungs. Simple cuboidal epithelia line the lumen of collecting ducts in the kidney and are present in the thyroid around the follicles that secrete thyroid hormones.
