Since different colors of light travel at different speeds, the refractive index is different for each color. As a result, when white light passes through the refracting surface of the prism, its components bend into different angles, causing the single beam of light to separate.

White light made up of 7 constituent colors is dispersed. It is dispersed as different colors have different wavelengths, in white light, red having maximum wavelength while violet having the least. That is why violet is deviated the most when white light is passed through a prism.
