In solids, the atoms are held in specific positions and they cannot move freely. So the atoms move in some fixed directions i.e. vibrate but they do not leave their place. We can say that motion that is possessed by solids is known as vibratory motion. When solids are heated, the atoms move apart because the heat energy try to overcome the force of attraction between the atoms due to which the motion of solids increases. When solids cool, the atoms again come close and the motion decrease.
