which type of tissue in brain
Answers
Traditionally, the brain is considered to be composed of two visibly distinguished tissue types: grey matter and white matter. One can also consider the meninges, a three-layered membrane that encloses the brain, as a third tissue type.
The grey matter consists of the neuronal cell bodies and glia cells, and its exact architecture and composition varies greatly between different brain regions. These differences, visible only microscopically or with special staining, define many “sub-types” of grey matter, depending on the resolution one is interested in. Two basic types of grey matter are laminated grey matter, composed of several distict layers (e.g. the cerebral cortex), and nuclei, which do not have such structure (e.g. the olivary nucleus).
White matter is mostly axons which originate in the cell bodies of neurons in the grey matter, and assemble together in bundles that travel and convey information from one brain region to another. This type of tissue is much more homogenous, and mostly varies in the amount of myelination that covers the axons (Myelin is an “insulation” layer that forms around some axons, and enables faster conduction of neuronal impulses).
