The Ganga-Brahmaputra basin has rich and varied natural vegetation. Tropical deciduous forests are found in the plain region of the basin. Some main species of trees are teak, sal and peepal. Thick bamboo grows in the Brahmaputra plain.
The deltaic regions like the Sundarbans in the Ganga-Brahmaputra basin are covered with mangrove forests which can survive both in salty and fresh waters.
At higher altitudes in the mountainous regions covering the states of Sikkim, Uttaranchal and Arunachal Pradesh, coniferous forests are found. Some species of the coniferous forests found here are pine, deodar and fir.
