Hypertonic solutions causes water to shift from the cell to plasma.

The solution with higher solute concentration than the liquid inside the cell(cell sap) can be called hypertonic in respect to the cell sap. This causes the extraction of the solvent or water from the cell. The cell shrinks if it is put into a hypertonic solution. The shrinkage is also called crenation.
