Vitamin A and C are very important for the proper growth and metabolism in the body. They can be supplied through our diet.

  • Vitamins are organic molecules that are required in small quantities. They are usually supplied through our diet as our body cannot synthesise most of them.
  • Vitamins are classified into two categories- fat soluble (A, D, E, K) and water soluble (B-complex, C).
  • Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin which is majorly obtained from beta-carotenoids. Retinol, an analogue of vitamin A, is used on the skin to prevent wrinkles and xerophthalmia.
  • Foods abundant in vitamin A include carrots, boccoli, spinach, dairy and fish.
  • Vitamin C or Ascorbic acid is a water soluble vitamin that is formed directly from Glucuronate. It is required to prevent diseases like scurvy.
  • Foods abundant in vitamin C include citrus fruits, potatoes, Brussels sprouts.
