Under the new system of government in Japan after World War II, Japan was allowed to be part of international defence blocs. The Constitution enacted post World War II, also allowed the United States to use their bases in Japan.

After World War II, a Constitution was passed in November, 1946, which restricted Japan from having an armed force and engaging in war.
