The French revolution was the period in France which led to the transfer of sovereignty from Monarch to elected body in 1789 .
Revolutionaries tried to create the sense of commonness through different measures among the French. Following were the main steps-
◀❇They gave idea of La patrie (the fatherland) and Le citoyen (the citizen).
◀❇They emphasised on the idea of nation as a united community enjoying equal rights under same constitution.
◀❇The former Royal standard was replaced by a tricolour - the new French flag.
◀❇A body of active citizens elected the states general, later on renamed as National Assembly .
◀❇New hymns were composed and promises were made on the name of nation.
◀❇Centralised administrative system was setup and uniform laws were placed for all citizens.
◀❇Uniform system of weight and measures were introduced.
◀❇Regional languages were replaced and French became the common language of France.
The French Revolution helped rest of Europe to became nation - state. Students and other educated middle class members setup Jacobin clubs. French armies supported the idea of Jacobin clubs in Holland , Belgium, Switzerland and Italy in 1793 and began to carry the idea of Nationalism in rest of Europe .
