IN 1674, THE FRANÇOIS MARTIN OF FRENCH EAST INDIA COMPANY ESTABLISHED A TRADING CENTER AT PONDICHERRY, WHICH EVENTUALLY BECAME THE CHIEF FRENCH SETTLEMENT IN INDIA.
