The Nizam of Hyderabad was the first to sign the subsidiary alliance.

The policy was adopted by lord Wellesly to make the princely states subordinate to British and in order to rule indirectly in these princely states. The policy made the princes to station British forces in their territories and accept a British Resident. This lead British to intervene more and more in these states.
