Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has approved three food grade wax coatings for application on fruits and vegetables and they are considered safe to eat.

  1. Beeswax - Natural wax produced by the honeybee.
  2. Shellac - A resin secreted by the female lac bug on trees.
  3. Carnauba - Wax obtained from the leaves of the carnauba palm.

All these waxes are available as dry flakes and dissolved in organic solvents  for application on the produce.

The wax coating, is an odourless, tasteless membrane which retains the freshness and quality of the produce.

However, there are regulations regarding the usage of these waxes too. It insists that the products that have been waxed has to be labelled appropriately indicating that.

Food grade waxes are approved by FSSAI.

Explanation:

  • Fruits coated with wax are generally safe to eat, however, if they are coated with other artificial or petroleum waxes, these are considered harmful. The natural wax of fruits are getting washed away by water. That’s why we should eat fruits after peeling off their cover.
  • FSSAI are a short form for the 'Food Safety and Standard Authority of India'. This allows coating with beeswax.
