Punch marked coins were introduced in Magadha empire with royal standards to ascertain their authenticity. In Arthashastra, Kautilya mentioned about minting of coins and the violation of the imperial Mauryan standards by private enterprises may had been offence.
Kautilya also advocated a theory of bimetallism for coinage, which involved the use of two metals, copper and silver under this government. In post Magadhan period punched marked coins were replaced by cast, die-struck coins.
