The first concentration camps in Germany were created shortly after Hitler's appointment as Chancellor in January 1933. In the weeks after the Nazis came to power, the SA (Sturmabteilung or Assault Sections), the SS (Schutzstaffel Protection Squadron, Nazi Party elite guard), the police and local civil authorities set up numerous detention camps to incarcerate political opponents, real or perceived, to Nazi politics.
