Variations of all sorts develop randomly in organisms due to separation of chromosomes and crossing over during gametogenesis, fusion of gametes and appearance of mutations. Only some of them will have adaptive values. Nature selects only these variations providing them a proper direction so that individual become more and fit in terms of survival.
