Acid should be added to water and not water to the acid.

This is due to the fact that the mixing of acid and water is an exothermic reaction.

This leads to production of large amount of heat.

When we add small amount of "acid" to "water", the heat energy released is easily absorbed by the water.

Thus it is more safe.

this is because when you add acid in water then it is mixed heat is absorbed slowly by the large amount of water

where as

if water is added to concentrated acid then a large amount of heat is evolved .This heat can harm us.

therefore it is suggested to not pour water in concentrated acid

...hope it will helpful
