While diluting an acid, why is it recommended that the acid should be added to water
and not water to the acid.

What is dilution?

The process of mixing an acid or base with water is known as dilution. Such an acid or a base is called diluted(acid/base).

Now,

Dilution of concentrated acid is an exothermic process. If water is added to a concentrated acid, the heat generated may cause the the mixture to splash out and cause severe burns. So acid must always be added to water with constant stirring because this method is much safer than the former one.
