While diluting an acid, why is it recommended that the acid should be
added to water and not water to the acid?

because the process of dissolving an acid or base in water is highly extrathermic one . the acid must alwys be added slowly to the water with constant stairing and if water added to concentrated acid. the heat genrated may cause the mixture to splash out or cause burns
