Dilution of concentrated acid is highly exothermic process. If we add water to acid than the heat produced is so large that it may cause the mixture to splash out and cause burns. So it is recommended always to add acid to water not water to acid.

if water is added to to acid,there is a sudden increase in temperature and the acid being in bulk tends to spurt out.If acid is added to water the water is in bulk and the acid being heavier settles down and the evolved heat is released in water itself.te spurting of acid is also minimized.HENCE ACID IS ADDED TO WATER AND NOT WATER IS ADDED TO ACID
