we know that,

average speed = total distance covered/total time taken

Based on the information given,

Total distance covered =(30+30)km

                                      = 60 km

The time taken to cover first 30 km=(30/40)

                                                         = 3/4 hour

The time taken to cover next 30 km=(30/20)

                                                          = 3/2 hour

So, total time taken=(3/4)+(3/2)

                               =(3+6)/2

                               = 9/2 hour

So, according to the formula stated above,

The average speed=(60)/(9/2)

                               =(60*2/9)

                              =(20*2/3)

                              = 40/3

                             = 13.33 km/hr

So, the average speed is 13.33  km/hr
