Answer:
The western coast of Karnataka is called 'Canara'. Canara basically means Kannada; however our English dictators couldn't spell the word Kannada so they anglicised it to Canara for ease of pronunciation for their English tongues (just like Coorg for Kodagu or Orrisa for Odisha). The western coast of Karnataka is divided into South Canara and North Canara which spells Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada respectively in the native language Kannada. And yes, the place was colloquially named after the language of the state.
