This is because he has to stop the fast moving ball in small amount of time ,which means that the great momentum of ball is decreased to zero in small amount of time ,which results in hurting the goalkeeper's hands.

As in cricket, when a cricket player catches a cricket ball ,he pulls his hand backwards to decrease the great momentum of fast cricket ball slowly. In this way a cricketer takes some time to stop the ball ,which do not hurt the player.
