While rewriting a sentence with *lest* is it always necessary to add *should* or not?

In some of the sentence u can add should and in some sentence u cannot for example:

1.She could not keep back her tears, and the chief cause of her pain seemed to be the fear lestpeople should doubt her truthfulness.

2.When you oil your beard, don't oil it too much, lest it soil your clothing
