While suffering from fever Rahul was given a cup of hot milk. Then his mother kept the clinical thermometer under the tongue and noted the reading of thermometer after taking it out from his mouth. Rahul wanted to know the temperature of hot milk by the same thermometer but was stopped by his mother.  Based on the situation answer the following questions.  Why did Rahul’s mother note the reading after taking out the thermometer from his mouth?  Why does the level of mercury change when the bulb is brought inside mouth?  Why can’t we use this thermometer to measure the temperature of hot milk?

1 when the thermometer bulb is removed from the mouth of patient , the Mercury thread will keep standing at the maximum level rigid point due to this week and read the correct body temperature of the patient even after removing the thermometer bulb from his mouth

2 As other answers have correctly sedated, it is because of the constriction in the tube between bulb and scale

3 we cannot use clinical thermometer to measure the temperature of hot milk if the boiling milk is too hot it will break
