While using iodine in the laboratory, some drops of iodine fell on Paheli's socks and some fell on her teacher's saree. The drops of iodine on the saree turned blue black while their colour did not change on the socks. What can be the possible reason?

Sarees are generally polished with starch and since iodine reacts with starch to form a complex which changes the color of the starch to blue black, the Saree's color changed to blue-black.

But the same is not the case with socks since they are not polished with starch. As there is no starch, there is no color change.

ANSWER:-

the saree must be made out of cotton. as cotton is a plant product which have starch in it, when iodine fell on it it showed blue black colour.

where as socks is made up of synthetic fibers , which do not contain starch in it . thus when the iodine fell on Paheli's socks the colour did not change.

hope this will help :)
