While watering a distant plant, a gardener partially closes the exit hole of the pipe by putting his finger on it. Explain why this results in the water streams going to a larger distance.

By the principle of the continuity,

Area is inversely proportional to the velocity.

This means, if area of the cross section is increased then velocity is decreased and vice versa.

Now, when the gardener is closing the exit by putting his finger then area of the cross section of the pipe decreases, as a result of which, the velocity of the streams coming out from it increases.

High velocity means, large distance in smaller interval of time.

Thus, if velocity increases, then higher distance is covered by the stream of water in lesser time.

Thus Gardener can easily give water to different plants which is located far away from him.

Hope it helps.
