1. Several months ago, I was at the checkstand in my small town’s only supermarket, with a whole bunch of similar cans of half-price something. The checker was having a problem—I don’t remember what— and to be helpful, I was moving the cans along and bagging them, but I inadvertently advanced some that hadn’t yet been scanned. The gentleman behind me asked whether I was going to pay for them.
