Explanation: carbon never denotes electron nor receives electron . Because if carbon gains 4 electrons forming C4- anion, but it would be difficult for the nucleus with 6 protons to hold on 10 electrons .

if it loses 4 electrons forming C4+ cation ,but it would require large amount of energy to remove 4 electrons leaving behind a carbon cation with 6 protons.
