This phenomenon is known as Dispersion. When sun's light passes from the tiny rain droplets, it splits into its constituent seven colours.This band of seven colours is known as spectrum.

When there is rain the white light get diffract by the the rain drops and there occurs dispersion of white light.Thats why the light get diffract and rainbow occurs . Just because of diffraction the white light form spectra means band of 7 light of different wavelengths causes formation of Rainbow
