Answer:

As a subjective opinion, I believe that anyone who would read the story would most probably sympathize with Philip rather than Uncle James.

I would sympathize with uncle James.

Explanation:

The reason is that in this story Uncle James is seen as a strict man who always likes everyone to follow the rules and regulations of his household. He is so strict that even the servants feel obligated to do exactly as he says no matter what any other member of the household would want. For example Philip wants breakfast after 8 but according to the rules breakfast is not served after 8. Even if Phillip came back after war, that should atleast mean something.

However, next Uncle James sees a dream in which Philip is threatening him which is why he loosens up a little on his dominating nature with Philip. So i still feel bad and sympathetic for Philip, not his uncle.

Answer:

I sympathize more with Philip rather than his strict a dominating Uncle James.

Uncle James was too much of a dominating character, and he was too uptight for his own good. Being strict and organised is an admirable trait, but he should loosen up a little and allow for exceptions in certain situations like when Philip came back from war, he should allow him to have his breakfast after 8.
