The Chaur rebellion occurred in Mindapore of West Bengal in 1798-99. It was started by the peasants and zamindars against the East India Company. High taxation, oppressive demands and distress caused by the famines were the causes which made the people to turn against the Company. Durjan Singh, a zamindar who was displaced from his land was the main leader of revolt. Besides Jangannath and Achal Singh were other important leaders in different locations.
