The Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act in 1856 allowed widows to remarry legally. This was a result of the widespread campaign by Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. It provided legal safety from previous rules that led to the loss of some inheritance upon marriage of a widow. This was especially for the Hindu child widows whose husbands died very early, sometimes even before the marriage was consummated.
