They both were members of a particular caste of leather workers.

The question has been asked from the story The Shroud (Kafan) by Premchand.
They were a father and son duo, belonging to the untouchable leather worker caste, the poorest and lowest caste in India's complex social system.
Both the father and the son refused to perform farmwork that is accessible in the neighbourhood.
Instead, they would rather take handouts or defraud others in order to live on a subsistence level.
