Who are gomasthas? What are their works.
Answers
Answer:
Gomasthas were the supervises appointed by the east India company since the 18th CE to supervise delivery of goods by weavers and artisans to the Company. Their supervision was strict
-- They used to set fixed prices for the delivered goods.
-- They were once very helpful towards weavers and artisans by helping them in crisis, but soon when the Company started to appoint gomasthas from other places, the new employees used to punish weavers brutally for delays.
-- They were described as ‘a paid manager of the private trader’s concerns’, who claimed ‘hardly any share in the profit and loss of his employer’s business’ in the International Economic History congress.
Hope it helps.
