Answer:
The Charter Act of 1813 sanctioned a sum of one lakh rupees per year for educational purposes.
But a dispute arose About the way the money was to be spent.
One group wanted it to be spent on the traditional Indian learning through classical (Sanskrit and Persian) and regional languages.
This group was called the orientalists.
The other group called the Anglicists, led by Lord Thomas Macaulay, favoured the promotion of western education through the medium of English.
This deadlock came to an end in 1835 when the government decided to use the money to promote western education through the medium of English.
